Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
