Comeback Daniil Medvedev Wins First Championship in Over Two Years

19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hardcourt

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for 882 days with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.

Medvedev, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging year, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serve in especial - resulted in him exiting of the elite rankings and ultimately splitting with long-time mentor Cervara.

Currently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over opponent Moutet.

It is his first championship since the Italian tournament and initial on a hard court from that period of 2023.

Success also means Medvedev has secured 21 championships at 21 distinct events.

"For the first time I have attended a event with my children simultaneously, so to secure a trophy is particularly special," said world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my second daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his last six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

His retrieving approach and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had led some to question if his capacity to play at the elite level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform positively, supported by an enhanced serving game.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, taking four of the concluding five games to go ahead.

The competitors traded breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his first professional title, gained dominance to create a third set.

He saved 4 early-game chances in a close third set before Medvedev broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, the winner earned the title with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
