England under Stokes have shown us all that the sport of cricket is all about enjoyment.

Few recall the last ball of the Ashes. It's the first that's famous. That errant delivery that reaches the slip cordon, that cover drive for four, that dismissal, shattering the stumps! Final deliveries? I had to research them. Ali slicing a drive behind to conclude a batting effort loss in a dead rubber in 2015; Boyd Rankin being caught in the slips off Harris, Boyd Rankin playing in his one and only Test at the conclusion of a 30-over collapse in a clean sweep that's been commonplace in 2014; a Harmison short ball glancing off Langer's shoulder for four leg byes, the single four Australia manage in a target they'll never get to make in 2005.

It separates between wondering how things will go, and knowing how they do. One thing's certain, there's no assurance there will be a successful conclusion. For the previous decade, England's trips Down Under have concluded in failure, as opposed to with them. Andy Flower was dismissed as manager after a crushing loss, in 2013-14, Silverwood was let go after a further defeat, in 2021-22. You can make a couple of teams out of English cricketers who featured in their final Test match at the conclusion of an trip Down Under during the previous 25 years, and even have a few players over to act as substitutes for each squad.

Stokes' squad have not professed to care too much about consequences. Stokes, like Eoin Morgan with the ODI squad before him, always says that whether or not a lofted drive is taken at the rope matters less as whether or not it was the proper call to attempt it in the beginning, and while fielding he's quick to praise a delivery man who allows scoring shots so long as they bringing the team closer to taking that next wicket. But then the key rationale Ben Stokes tried to teach his team to follow this style was so they would be in a superior situation to deliver the style of play he feels will succeed for them in Australia.

The upcoming Ashes, for which they have been planning extensively, already feels like the result they can't get away from. It is Bazball's critical moment. And there are numerous “I told you so’s” in the national sport for the team to get away with it if they do suffer another bad defeat in the next few weeks. Stokes's approach has been predicated on defying expectations, and the counterpart is it seems that there are many individuals who would be pleased to be validated.

In light of this, it's a suitable occasion to point out that the important question isn't just where this concludes, but regardless of whether we had fun along the way. Four years ago, the English team were an utterly abject sports team. They had been defeated in a quartet of successive tournaments and were trailing in the fifth, against the Indian team, when it was suspended because of Covid. They had won a single Test match out of seventeen, and lost twelve of them by humiliating deficits. Eight wickets to the Kiwis at Edgbaston, A defeat by 157 runs to the Indian squad at the Oval, an an innings defeat to Australia at the iconic ground, A defeat by ten wickets to the Windies in the scenic location.

The team was soundly beaten by West Indies in Grenada in the early part of 2022 just before Joe Root stepped down as skipper.

By the conclusion, after all those periods of testing and social distancing and controlled settings and constant defeats at the hands of all opponents, they were virtually the most dejected and weary Test team England had ever sent out to a playing arena. A significant portion of what Ben Stokes and McCullum have accomplished in the following period was in response to all that, as well as the Stokes' personal encounters during his time away from the game in 2021 when he had endured a bout of anxiety. It was intended to remind everyone that it was meant to be fun, if it was supposed to be anything.

That remains true now. Despite when the Ashes is on the line, and although the team have eventually come to agree that they need to be a slightly versatile in the way they approach performing. Normal existence has a way of crowding in, it can be hard to retain the knowledge we acquire in our lowest moments.

Here is the England team that peeled off successive run chases of three challenging targets in one period against the Black Caps; that scored a massive 378 to overcome the Indian team that same summer; that became the pioneering away squad to win a clean sweep in the host nation; that showed resilience to a draw after going trailing by two matches in the the series; that overcame the Indian team in the southern city off the back of one of the most remarkable knocks ever played in the the area, and then beat the Pakistani team in Multan off the back of another.

Here we have the England team, too, that unexpectedly end up suffering a defeat in a Test by an innings defeat even though the opposition made a modest 326; who fetched up suffering a loss in one of the better Tests ever contested after making a bold declaration in the first innings against New Zealand, and then did the same thing against Australia; who were soundly beaten by a massive 434 runs in the venue, and who were on the losing side of one of the island nation's finest wins. Collectively, they have achieved some of the most improbable victories, experienced some of the most embarrassing exits, scored some of the surprising centuries, and secured some of the most startling five-fers in the history of the national sport.

However this historic contest concludes, they have been, one after another, incredible, preposterous, ridiculous, infuriating, and completely, without regret, unapologetically thrilling.
