No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
