Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
